Bay City Roller Les Mckeown : It's Like Being Back In 1974
It might only seem like yesterday that Les McKeown was scoring #1 hits with The Bay City Rollers - but now times have changed the former pop pin-up shows no signs of letting up.
Now 56, Les is still performing Rollers tunes with tribute act The Legendary Bay City Rollers. The former front-man is also the star attraction of Rollermania, a musical tour celebrating the life and times of the tartan-clad seventies band.
Despite enduring success with his tribute performances, Les admitted on The Hour in August 2010 that he was desperate to get back with his old band members – who split in 1979 – and sent out a on air plea for them to get in touch.
Back on The Hour sofa today, Les admitted he was disappointed to announce that his plea had fallen on deaf ears.
He said: “It’s been rather disappointing; there was a slight negative response to it. They wanted to wait but we are all getting older and I’d like to make a move right now.”
Whilst a return of the rollers seems unlikely, fans can at least remember their favourite songs as Rollermania tours its way around the country this year.
Featuring all the old classic such as Shang-a-Lang and Bye Bye Baby, Les admits to feeling a sense of nostalgia whenever he takes to the stage wearing his famous tartan trousers.
Les added: “If you close your eyes you’d think you were back in 1974. It’s just a really fun friendly atmosphere.
“I basically tell the story of the Bay City Rollers, how they got the name, how they started, and funny anecdotes of our career.
“All the good stuff none of the dark stuff. It’s very upbeat and a celebration of the rollers music really.”
“The fans can come along, they get dressed up in their roller gear, bring on the tartan!”
